About The Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Formed perhaps 200-300 million years ago and straddling the border between North Carolina and Tennessee, The Great Smoky Mountains are among the oldest mountains in the world. The glaciers of the last ice age affected the Smoky Mountains without encroaching on them. During that era, glaciers invaded much of North America but failed to reach the Smokies. Thus, for many species of plants and animals that were displaced, our mountains became their new home. Undisturbed, these species had eons to diversify.

Biological diversity is an evident feature of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Encompassing over 800 square miles of the Southern Appalachian Mountains, no other park of similar size and climate can match the park's amazing heterogeneity of flora and fauna. Over 10,000 species have been documented whilst an additional 90,000 species may live here.
