Weddings in the
Great Smoky Mountains National Park

Couple the beautiful natural chapel of the Smoky Mountains with the relatively minor requirements for getting married and you understand why a Smokies wedding and honeymoon is second in popularity only to Las Vegas. Couples can be joined in holy matrimony in a chapel, the National Park, or the privacy of their cottage or cabin.

Both parties must be present to obtain the marriage license from the County Clerk's Marriage License Centers (see below). There is no waiting period and an appointment is not necessary to obtain the license. Proof of age is required by a driver's license, state-issued picture ID, a valid passport or certified birth certificate. A blood test is not required and applicants need not be residents of Sevier County to wed there. Couples may also bring a valid Tennessee marriage license from anywhere in the state of Tennessee, but remember that the license is only valid for 30 days after issue. If applicants are under the age of 18, both parents or legal guardians must sign the marriage certificate. NOTE: The license costs $36 and may be used anywhere in the state of Tennessee. The County Clerk will only take cash in the exact amount.

If you want to have your wedding ceremony in the Park itself, that's easy too. To have your ceremony at any of the historic structures such as the Primitive Baptist or Methodist Churches in Cades Cove, simply contact the Park's Ranger Activities Division (423-436-1266) to request an application for a permit. There is no charge for the permit, but there are a few simple guidelines you need to keep in mind, however. Because the historic structures in the Park are of wood, no candles or lamps are allowed. In addition, parking is very limited (6 parking spots at the Baptist Church, for example). An application to marry in Cades Cove must be submitted to the Cades Cove Center. If you want to marry anywhere else in the Park (on a mountain top, for example), a permit is required if you have more than 20 people in your party. Finally, you must understand that even if you have a permit for a ceremony in the Park, you don't have a reservation in the sense that persons outside your party (tourists) are excluded--they have unfettered access to the premises. Most are courteous enough, though, to keep their distance.

Dr. Alden Marshall will perform your wedding ceremony in a place of your choice--in the Smoky Mountain National Park, overlooking a majestic view of the Smokies, or in the privacy of your cabin or chalet.

Rick Joyce - ordained minister will perform on-location weddings, including your cabin or in the National Park. He can provide flowers, photography, and cakes.

Cabin Weddings of the Smokies - Although the chapel setting is very romantic, the rush and informalities have encouraged us to help the Bride and Groom do something much more personal and intimate. We give each couple the opportunity to be married in the setting of their choice, whether standing in front of a warm, crackling fire, within the natural surroundings of Cades Cove, beside beautiful Laurel Falls, or even on horseback. Whatever location you choose, our Ordained Minister will perform a memorable Christian ceremony.
